Have you ever wondered how books are organised in libraries and the workers behind these systems? This talk will reflect on some of the problematic histories and legacies of classification in librarianship, particularly heterosexism and cissexism, but also sexism, racism, colonialism and more discrimination. Clare will critique the idea that libraries and librarians must be neutral, and discuss some of the creative and caring ways library workers and communities have challenged and continue to challenge and change these systems. She will introduce you to some key figures and classification systems in library history, including Melvil Dewey, illustrate examples of how the systems have changed over time (and still need to change), share resources you can use to find out more, as well as suggest ways you can challenge discrimination in library classification too.
