**Foreign Fighters & ‘Other’ Foreign Fighters ** The term ‘foreign fighters’ typically brings to mind cases of terrorist groups. But what about other types of foreign fighting that have have been common throughout history in armed conflict and continue today? How have states been grappling, for example, with individuals joining foreign armed groups to fight against the Islamic State group, or against an abusive regime? Can there be ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foreign fighters? In this session, Marnie will explore the personal stories of some foreign fighters, consider the differences between ‘foreign terrorist fighters’, ‘mercenaries’, ‘international brigades’, ‘volunteers’ and ‘freedom fighters’, and discuss certain tensions in how domestic law has debated such cases and the international legal rules that apply.
