“The time for fence-sitting is past, and feminists must take a stand: Will we continue to pursue ‘equal-opportunity domination’ while the planet burns? Or will we reimagine gender justice in an anticapitalist form - one that leads past the present crisis to a new society?” This is the underlying premise for the ground-breaking 2019 manifesto “Feminism for the 99%”, written by Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya, and Nancy Fraser. Rallying against the dovetailing of liberal feminism with capitalist exploitation and domination, the authors of this radical manifesto chart a new way forward for the feminist movement, one that picks up the radical imaginings of past women’s movements and seeks to address the needs and concerns of the 99% - women and men. ‘Feminism for the 99%’ details the multitude of crises engulfing the populace throughout the world; crises of economy, of ecology, of politics, and of care, and presents a feminist explanation, and solution, for them. Acknowledging that this new eruption of capitalist crises threatens life as we know it, the manifesto charts a way to confront the exploitative system that continually produces misery, pain, and war for most people around the world. Join us for the fourth instalment of our MANIFESTOS series, as we discuss the central tenets of ‘Feminism for the 99%’, unpack the radical imaginings of this feminist manifesto, and explore the path forward set down by the authors to end neoliberal capitalist tyranny for the benefit of the 99%.
